Sonia Sotomayor, Latina, Woman, career Judge and... now... racist.
Once again GOP mouthpieces are marginalizing their party by making claims that they know are false. These claims are being supported by a quote that was pulled out of context. But let's not solely blame the right wing blowhards for running with this "reverse racism" charge... ABC News' post on the story does nothing to illustrate how the quote was pulled out of context. Rachel Maddow was the only political news show in town (that I saw) running the full quote in context.
To illustrate, here's the segment of Ms. Sotomayor's 2001 speech that people in the "liberal media" are using to illustrate her racism:
"I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life."
Here's what Sotomayor's quote looks like when read in the context of her speech:
I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life. Let us not forget that wise men like Oliver Wendell Holmes and Justice Cardozo voted on cases which upheld both sex and race discrimination in our society. Until 1972, no Supreme Court case ever upheld the claim of a woman in a gender discrimination case. I, like Professor Carter, believe that we should not be so myopic as to believe that others of different experiences or backgrounds are incapable of understanding the values and needs of people from a different group. Many are so capable. As Judge Cedarbaum pointed out to me, nine white men on the Supreme Court in the past have done so on many occasions and on many issues including Brown.
Funny how Sotomayor's critics leave out that last part about how we shouldn't be so myopic to believe that white people are always going to rule against minorities based on their personal experiences... isn't it?

What's even more absurd about the "racism" claims being made are the people who are making them. People like Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck have long histories of racist comments themselves... and now are projecting their own bigoted views onto this woman. (If you have any doubts as to my claims of Beck or Limbaugh's racism... please click here, here, here, and here) Then you have Tom Tancredo back on TV crying "racism"... what a riot! This is a guy who based his entire 2008 presidential run on xenophobia, and hatred towards illegal immigrants. (probably the reason he didn't make it past the primaries)
Watching the Republican party continue to denegrate themselves in this manner is pretty hilarious. It's like they're still living in the "Reagan" era where politicians could say something on TV one day... and no one could find it on YouTube the next day, when they had completely reversed their positions. Or that they can take someone's quotes out of context, and no one will search for the full text (like I just did) on Google and chuckle at how completely out of touch these people look to anyone with half a mind.
